Erin Woods traffic calming pilot project - BACKGROUNDER
In 2015, a community traffic issue identified by the Erin Woods Community Association was selected for a traffic calming project. The City collected data on pedestrian safety and vehicle speeds in the community. Based on the number of locations identified, Erin Woods was selected to pilot new traffic calming curbs throughout the community. City staff have worked with the Erin Woods Community Association and a small group of residents to develop a traffic calming plan. You are invited to share your feedback on the proposed traffic calming plan. You can do that in two ways:
This webpage will continue to be updated as the project progresses, so please check back for updates. If you have questions about this project please contact 311 and the Community Traffic team will respond. For general information about the program please visit the Community Traffic Studies webpage. The Committee - What we did and are doing:
Concerned citizens of Calgary have formed a Traffic Calming Committee in the community of Erin Woods in response to another tragic pedestrian accident that occurred September 18th 2015. Nickolas Paswisty was struck and killed on Erin Woods Boulevard S.E. and Erindale Crescent. This intersection is not the only concern for this committee but has been a rally point for action. Our Goal is to: * Make our Streets Safe * Engage our Community * Awareness Campaign - Pedestrians & Vehicles, school patrols * Short Cutting through community * Bicycle Route * Work with City of Calgary & City Police for improving policy on reporting which in turn will help in the City's evaluating priority system. i.e. 311 * Continue support for Youth Liaison "Lights for Nick" * Co-ordinate with other community's through out the City of Calgary to make all residential streets safer. Reallocation of budget for education. |

What Can We Do Where do we get Information
|
The committee has identified some area's in Erin Woods that some of the following Traffic Calming Measures could be implemented:
Pedestrian Signs The Pedestrian signs should be visible. Clearly displayed with no obsticles and obstructions. Bike Lane The City has initiated a program to improve commuter cycling routes in response to City Council's priority to encourage alternate modes of travel. On Street bicycle routes help create awareness of all motorized and non motorized vehicles. Four Way Stop A motorist approaching an all-way stop is always required to come to a full stop before the crosswalk or stop line. In most jurisdictions that use all-way stops, pedestrians always have priority at a crosswalk, even if the crosswalk is not delineated with pavement markings. Curb-Road Bump Outs Pinch-points, or curb extensions, are used to extend sidewalks and reduce lane space, often to guard pedestrian crossings. Squeezing the roadways like this... Traffic Circles It has no lane markings. A traffic circle is a type of intersection that directs both turning and through traffic onto a one-way circular roadway, usually built for the purposes of traffic calming or aesthetics. What is a Limit Your Speed Board? Limit Your Speed Boards are permanent signs which use a radar detection system that is activated by speeding vehicles. When a vehicle is travelling within the speed limit, the sign does not show the vehicle speed and the sign remains blank. When a vehicle is speeding, the radar system is used to detect the speed and the sign displays flashing lights, the speed limit and a message to slow down. * Speed Kills! Please pay attention - everyone |
